In India Information Technology Act 2000 (“IT Act”) and the rules made there under is the primary law on information technology. Rules under IT Act address a wide number of issues prevalent in the area of information technology; examples of such Rules are:

- Information Technology (Use of Electronic Records and Digital Signatures) Rules, 2004
- Information Technology (Reasonable security practices and procedures and sensitive personal data or information) Rules, 2011
- Information Technology (Security Procedure) Rules, 2004
